My Kingdom Come and Hadley Grayson
Bey sat quietly, just watching Crook act like a lunatic and seemed rather un-phased. It had often been joked that Bey could be a kids horse, compared to Crook she was an angel. Hadley walked Bey out a bit before pushing her up to a trot again, she didn't want her muscles to get cold while they were waiting. Bey put her head down and collected herself looking every part the beautiful thoroughbred she was. There were camera flashes here, a hoot and a holler there, nothing phased Bey. She was taking all the attention in. She obviously wasn't the favorite for the So Sassy Sprint it was likely that she wouldn't even touch Athena's Desires in this race. Bey had a single horse of the year race win to her name and although a very talented runner, her accomplishments paled in comparison to the daughter of Deadly Desires and Pegasus Wings. Now had Crook been in her spot there would probably be less anxiety because Crook had handily taken Athena's Desires down all season, but Bey wasn't Crook. Bey was her own type of racehorse who was very capable of pulling a huge upset in the first leg of the turf sprinter triple tiara and that was exactly what Grayson Meadows was planning to do.
Crook pawed furiously at the turf, digging a small hole with her foot on the outer edge of the track. Alex pressed her forward and trotted her in a tight circle. The crowd in the stands to watch the works today erupted in clicks from a camera and sounds of awe. Crook arched her neck into a perfect curve, her body rounded out and collected itself, and her tail flew majestically behind her. She certainly didn't disappoint when it came to being a crowd pleaser. Unlike Bey, Crook was the clear cut favorite for the Turquoise Sprint. A title she earned and was very deserving of. Her only competition came in the form of a former stablemate, Phantasm Frost. The colt was a threat, and had a history of being something of a wild card, either he showed up or he didn't. But there was one piece of undeniable evidence about him, he had never once beaten Crook in his 28 race career. This race was hopefully going to be no different.
Crook had done nothing wrong this season and had taken every leg of the sprinter triple crown prep series except for the Rush Stakes and the Boys Party in which she couldn't have participated in because it was a race restricted to colts. One of those victories came in a form of a four length romp. Crook was on the top of the world currently and with every race she ran she just kept getting better. Did she look like the horse who could finally pull of a sprinter triple crown? Well yes she did, but even Demonic Desires who was sitting in the same exact spot as Crook at this point last year failed to do it. The plan was not to worry about the crown but to take each race one step at a time. Crook would run down anything you put in front of her weather the horse was older, younger, male or female, she was your horse that feared nothing and would come from behind or off the pace or on the pace if necessary.
They'd been given the clear and Alex cantered Crook over and walked her out a bit allowing Hadley time to get Bey loaded which didn't take much at all. Crook on the other had sat back on her hind legs. It wasn't a unknown trait of hers to refuse to gate sometimes, today would just be one of those days. After some assistance and some prodding Crook finally gated and they were off seconds later.
Crook broke the quickest of the two and rushed out of the gate with Alex not even moving a muscle on her. She had been in works with Bey before and she knew how to run against the filly, so he let her position herself before taking command and keeping her running straight. Hadley had to hustle Bey hard at the beginning, the gap between her and Crook was already two lengths and there was no way Bey would catch Crook if she was too far back.
Crook flicked her ears around listening for Alex and listening for Bey's hoof-beats behind her. She strode out like the true champ she was, her main was a black fire blazing across the prairie. Her body an unstoppable machine, she'd never looked so good in her life. Long gone was her scrawny two year old gangly little body and now she looked like a lean swan, graceful but powerful. A force that was to be reckoned with.
With only two furlongs left to go Hadley sent Bey after Crook, hoping that the bay filly had exerted herself although it was highly unlikely. Her tiny gray-roanish body made and appearance next to Crook's shoulder and for a second, Hadley thought Crook may just have exerted herself. But when Bey got up to Crook's throat the filly took off, and not just a little, two strides and she was already a length a head, then three, five. Crook powered her way down the turf and Alex didn't even have to so much as touch her. He looked behind him to see Bey trying her hardest to cut into Crook's lead but she would never catch the super filly that he sat upon as they crossed the wire a solid seven lengths ahead of a fast closing Bey.
Crook had a date with destiny while Bey had a tough race ahead, either way they were both very impressive today and were very much ready to take on their opponents in the sprinter triple crowns.
